A Brief History

Tampa got its start as a pioneer community that sprung up around the U.S. Army outpost of Fort Brooke in 1849. The townsfolk originally called the settlement Tampa Town but shortened it to Tampa by 1855. The budding town’s economy finally took off when phosphate was discovered in Bone Valley in 1883 after decades of uncertainty stemming from wars. Tobacco was another solid crop in the area, which made many people very rich once the railroad line made it to Tampa and they were able to export cigars to the rest of the country.

These days, Tampa enjoys a large population of full-time residents as well as a booming tourist industry. Its idyllic location on the coast brings many beach enthusiasts to the city each year. Popular attractions include Busch Gardens Tampa, Adventure Island, Lowry Park Zoo and The Florida Aquarium. Tampa is also home to the NFL Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the NHL Tampa Lightning teams.
