A Brief History

St. Petersburg got its start when Detroit resident John C. Williams purchased the land in 1875. He played an integral role in bringing a railroad line to the area, along with a man named Peter Demens. The city was officially incorporated in 1892. When it came time to name the city, Williams and Demens flipped a coin to determine who would have the honor of naming the budding town. Demens won the coin toss and decided to name the town after St. Petersburg in Russia, where he grew up.

These days, St. Petersburg is popular among full-time residents and tourists alike. People flock to the area for its easy beach access as well as its developed downtown that is considered one of the best in the south. The city enjoys a rich arts community, comprised of the Mahaffey Theater complex, the Morean Arts Center, the Coliseum, the Palladium Theatre, the Salvador Dalí Museum, the Florida International Museum, the St. Petersburg Museum of History and the Florida Holocaust Museum. Dozens of art galleries are accessible as well.
